How To Repair Brick That Is Flaking

When bricks begin to deteriorate, flake, or break down, we refer to this as spalling. It typically involves not just flaking, but also chipping, or peeling away of the outer layers of brick. This leaves you with a rough and uneven appearance that is also at risk of causing even more damage from water intrusion.

Spalling brick is usually the result of prolonged exposure to moisture caused by relentless freeze-thaw cycles. Chimneys can withstand a lot considering they are constantly exposed to environmental factors and sometimes extreme weather conditions. But neglecting to resolve even the smallest cracks can eventually lead to extensive and costly damage. Masonry repair should always be a high priority when it comes to chimney care and maintenance.

  1. In order to repair brick that has been affected by spalling, we first have to assess the extent of damage. We will thoroughly inspect all of the brick and mortar in order to put the appropriate and effective repair plan in place.
  2. Next, we will carefully remove the damaged bricks from the chimney using chisels, hammers, or other masonry tools. In order to ensure the chimney restoration is done correctly, we make sure to clear away all debris and clean the exposed masonry surface.
  3. When we are satisfied with the clean and prepared surface of the chimney, we then start to place new brick. Each brick must be carefully positioned in order to ensure a secure fit and flawless match with the existing masonry.
  4. The last step in the process is to apply mortar to the joints between the brick. Again, we are careful in making sure the new mortar and existing mortar match seamlessly. In order to do this, we use specialized tools to shape and finish the mortar joints.

In perfect conditions, mortar takes about 24-48 hours to set, followed by a few extra days to cure to maximum strength. However, temperature, humidity, and the mortar mix itself influences the exact time frame for masonry repair.

How to Repair Brick Mortar Joints: Tuckpointing Explained

If you’re lucky enough to have chimney repairs that don’t require new brick, just new mortar joints, then tuckpointing or repointing will help restore the structural integrity and appearance of your chimney.

Like brick repair, the process of tuckpointing requires us to remove the existing mortar from in between the bricks. We do this very carefully with the help of chisels and grinders, being extra cautious to not damage the surrounding brick.

After preparing the new mortar mix to match in the exact color, composition, and texture of the existing mortar, we start applying it in all of the cleaned-out joints using a trowel. Each mortar joint should be filled evenly to ensure a secure bond. After applying the mortar, a jointer or striking tool is used to create the concave appearance that also helps shed water away from the joint.

When all of the joints are completed, we clean the excess mortar from the face of the brick to provide a neat finish to the masonry. Once the mortar has properly cured for a few days, your chimney will be as good as new again.

How Can I Prevent Future Chimney Masonry Damage?

After reading the process of repairing masonry damage, you might be hoping there is more you can do to help avoid these potentially costly services. Thankfully, if you are proactive about booking regular inspections, keeping up with regular maintenance, and fixing minor repairs promptly, you can significantly extend the life of your chimney and help minimize the need for such extensive repairs down the line.

Another service we often recommend is chimney waterproofing. By applying a waterproof sealant to the exterior of your chimney, this will help create a protective barrier against moisture, further preventing water intrusion and the damage related to that. This simple, yet effective, approach can go a long way in helping preserve your chimney’s structural integrity and appearance.
